This is our weekend getaway recap. I will hopefully find time this weekend to make a movie with all the photos. Afterwards it will be posted it here.
Friday afternoon I called to wish my hubby's grandma a happy birthday & then finished packing for the weekend. Then my in-laws picked up my son for the weekend while my hubby dropped our cat off at the vet's for observation over the weekend. I packed the car while my hubby finished his work. When we left for the weekend, there were terrible thunderstorms for the first 20 minutes followed by clear skies for the remainder of the drive. I swear it looked like night behind us & a perfect sunny day ahead of us.
We arrived at the Inn at 835 (bed & breakfast) where we discovered a cozy bedroom with a comfy sofa & a large bathroom. There waiting for us were some sugar cookies from the inn keeper! Next I got us settled in as my hubby checked on his work project. After a relaxing long bath, we slept like logs in a large comfortable king bed.
Saturday morning we woke up early, got ready & enjoyed Eggs Benedict for breakfast in dining room with other friendly guests. After breakfast, my hubby got us all checked in as I discovered a beautiful bouquet of flowers with a sweet note he had delivered to our room for me. When I almost started to cry with happiness the housekeeper gave me a hug saying I was going to make her cry. Then when she met my hubby she said, "you're one of the good ones!" She's definately right about that one! I do love my hubby for everything he is.
First we toured the Executive Mansion (i.e. Governor's Mansion) which had an open airway with an original layout. Next we snacked on fresh fruit tarts at the restored victorian home, Incredibly Delicious which were wonderfully & light. Unfortunately they were out of their popular homemade butter raspberry croissants. Then we went to the historical Union Station where they were very helpful finding some additional visitor information. They really went out of their way. For dinner we ate at Chesapeake Seafood Restaurant which was much better than it's website. The food was delicious & they really cater to individual needs. I'd recommend it to anyone for a wonderful evening out. On the way home, we passed a local musical festival where we happen to overhear the worst singing either of us have ever heard! Our jaws literally dropped open as we looked at each other in horror & burst out laughing. Man oh man, we definitely did not go there!
After a quick nap, we woke up just in time to discover warm delicious macadamia nut cookies (made & delivered by the inn keeper) & leave for our evening show. My hubby devoured the cookies (his favorite kind ever!) on the way to the Springfield Muni Opera which is a nice outdoor (& obviously very popular) theater. There we enjoyed the musical show 'Miss Saigon' with its' great performances! Too bad we don't have something like us around that. Oh how nice that would be! On the way home, we noticed a hydroelectric dam by Lake Springfield which was surprising but nice to see. Unfortunately I started getting bad Braxton Hicks contractions (probably from too much walking even though we tried to limit it) for the remainder of the night. I had trouble sleeping as a result & woke up every two hours.
Sunday we got up early again & joined the other guests in the dining room for the inn's well known french toast breakfast. It was delicious! After breakfast, our new acquaintances (also guests @ B&B) exchanged contact info. Then I showered & packed everything up while hubby checked on his work's project status.
We checked out of the B&B before taking the Dana-Thomas House Tour nearby. It was very interesting & the layout obviously well-planned for entertaining purposes but man it would drive me nuts to live there. My life would be in danger every time I would ask my hubby to get something from me from upstairs or downstairs considering there are actually 16 different levels in the house!
We then toured the Lincoln Home & neighborhood. It was what I expected for the most part. Although I didn't plan on the Braxton Hicks I started getting during the tour! What I did find amazing was how small the size of Lincoln's one-room cabin was that he grew up in compared to the ten-room home they built before leaving Springfield! That was quite the achievement!
We picked up some chocolate dinosaurs for our son at Pease's Fine Candies & Salted Nuts & then toured the Old State Capital where we saw some really interesting maps of the United States before, during & after the civil war. We did a little shopping before having an early dinner at Tuscany's Italian Restaurant. Since we got there early, we got great personalized attention with amazing food & fabulous friendly service. They even gave us a free desert to help celebrate our early anniversary! The decor was so relaxing & talented. We were quite impressed.
As we headed home with storm clouds threatening to bombard us, we saw the most amazing bright & full fainbow in the sky. I don't think we've seen one like that since our honeymoon in Hawaii! As the storm clouds disipitated behind us, so did the rainbow ahead of us.
Our son greeted us happily with hugs as he told us all about his fun weekend with Grandpa & Grandma. Then off to bed with Daddy he went. It was clear he had as much this past weekend as we did!
