We got a smart one!

Son has started using a toddler bed. We have a bed rail for it to keep him from falling out of the bed but the rail goes the entire length of his bed. We were a little worried that he would try to climb over the bed rail when he wakes up and hurt himself so we didn't use it. Since the bed is only 1 foot off the floor we thought he was in greater danger of him getting hurt that way than just rolling out of bed. So here's how the second night went:

2:30 AM: Wakes up and starts whimpering a little bit...not totally awake. Normally he just falls right back asleep when this happens so we listen for a few seconds.

2:31 AM: THUMP!

2:31 AM and 2 seconds: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

He didn't hurt himself of course (it's a very short fall) but this woke him up big time and it took Wife over an hour to calm him down and get him back asleep. Hmmm...this isn't going to work.

So, we put the bed rail back in. He's now sleeping through the night again (after 3 days in the new bed) and in the morning he just pushes the bed rail out of the way and climbs around it. No problem. We gotta remember that we got a smart kid here.
